Choosing a Contractor

Because it is the contractor who will make the biggest difference in how well your system being installed peforms, we have listed a few questions you should ask.

  • What is your license number?
Under Michigan law contractors must be licensed to perform work in the state of Michigan. Comfort First Heating & Cooling's license number is 71-00805.
  • Are you insured?
If an uninsured contractor gets hurt on your property, you may have to pay his medical bills and lost wages. You also may have to pay for any damage to your property. Comfort First Heating & Cooling is fully licensed and insured. We're happy to provide you with a copy of our insurance certificate on request.
  • Tell me about your service department.
Make sure the installer has a professoinally-trained service department, with adequate staff, equipment and trucks, and that will service you after hours if necessary. (To determine a contractor's 24-hour emergency service, call them after hours for their response.) All Comfort First Heating & Cooling service technicians are factory trained and are certified to handle refrigerants under the new Federal Government regulations.
  • Do you pull all required permits?
This makes sure that the job is done right and is safe and inspected by the proper agencies. If there is no permit, you may be required to have the work done over, even if it was installed properly. Comfort First Heating & Cooling always pulls permits and never subcontracts our work.
  • Do you want to check the ductwork?
That's what a proper contractor would do - examine all existing ductwork for sizing to accommodate new equipment and to check for leaks - Comfort First Heating & Cooling always does.
  • How do you know what size of equipment to install?
ACCA and all major manufacturers require a complete heat loss/heat gain of your home. Comfort First Heating & Cooling accomplishes this by measuring all the walls, windows, ceiling heights, and insulation values which are entered into a computer program which produces a complete and comprehensive printout of your heating and cooling requirements.
  • What make and model number are you recommending?
,Get full model numbers on all equipment to verify the BTUs and SEER ratings.
  • What kinds of warranties cover this equipment?
Have in writing both the manufacturer's and contractor's warranties on the equipment and installation. Plus, Comfort First Heating & Cooling gives you our 100% satisfaction guarantee. If you are not competely satisfied, we will not stop until you are.
  • Now, what are your price and terms?
Make sure the price includes equipment, installation, all permits, necessary writing and plumbing, and taxes. A new, energy efficient system often can pay for itself on the money you'll save on energy bills over what you're paying for your old, less efficient system.
